How to build a network: A guide for business leaders

A strong network can be one of the most powerful tools for career or business advancement, no matter your role or responsibility in a company. Successful businesses rarely made it to dizzying heights through working in isolation. A strong network can have a knock-on effect on growth, partnerships and innovation.

Our networking opportunities are something that we’re particularly proud of and passionate about here at the University of Warwick Science Park. We understand that in order to be innovative and resourceful, collaboration with others is essential.

If you are a business leader wondering how to build a network, we’re here to guide you.

The value of a professional network

Whether you’re at the start of your journey and building your business, scaling to the next level or navigating a competitive industry, a professional network can be an incredible asset to have under your belt. Don’t underestimate the value of the right connections!

No matter how independently you work, getting a different perspective on market trends, challenges, or new trends and technologies can be indispensable. We all need a little guidance from time to time, and this is what a well-cultivated network can provide. Plus, investors and clients often come via trusted referrals in your circle.

Speaking of referrals, did you know that referrals and personal recommendations significantly improve your chances of securing new business, funding or talent? By networking, you put yourself and your business in front of people that matter, opening doors to opportunities that may have never otherwise come knocking.

And let’s not forget – building a network is a two-way street. It’s an opportunity to contribute your knowledge and connections and establish yourself as a credible and trusted pillar of your industry and community. On the surface, it might feel a bit like you’re just collecting contacts at the start, but with a bit of work, you can cultivate meaningful relationships that fuel long-term success.

How to build a network

So, how exactly do you go about surrounding yourself with this all-important network? It’s quite simple – get yourself out there and start communicating! It can feel a bit daunting, but networking online is a good place to start.

How to build your network online

Arguably, LinkedIn’s primary purpose is to facilitate networking. X (formerly known as Twitter) also has a strong professional side. ‘Liking’, commenting and generally engaging with relevant people can be enough to spark up a conversation and put your name out there. Similarly, it’s worth researching whether there are any online communities or groups that you could join.

Here are some online destinations that could be of interest to business leaders in the tech industry:

  • Tech Nation: A UK-based growth platform for tech companies, with founder networks, resources and community engagement offering peer learning, introductions to investors and more
  • UK Tech Cluster Group: A national network of regional tech hubs and clusters connecting businesses to local ecosystems, support programmes and community events
  • Digital Leaders: A professional community focused on digital transformation and leadership, bringing together leaders from the public and private sectors, offering online forums, webinars and networking sessions
  • The UK Business Forums: A large community of UK business owners and entrepreneurs, including tech firms, that offers peer advice, legal/tax guidance, growth strategies and supplier recommendations.
  • Tech West Midlands: A regional network championing tech in the West Midlands and bringing together and developing resources for 3000 tech businesses in the region.

There are also Slack channels such as #TechLondon and LinkedIn groups such as UK Tech Leaders and Digital & Tech Startups UK that are worth checking out. Use all of these platforms and more as a place to create, share and consume thought leadership content.

How to network with people in person

Away from the online space, networking continues to be an important part of building a business. Attending industry events, workshops, and meetups remains the best way to build your network. Online platforms are a great tool, but they cannot replicate face-to-face interactions that allow for richer conversations, stronger connections and spontaneous opportunities.

Before you head to an industry networking event, set clear goals. What do you want to get from this endeavour? Looking to meet potential partners? Attract talent? Explore new technologies? Arriving prepared helps you to make the most of your time and opportunities.

At the University of Warwick Science Park, we are dedicated to bringing together ambitious founders, researchers, funders and support services under one roof. Our networking events play a big role in this, and throughout the year, we run a mix of workshops, seminars and meetups.

Whether you’re a tenant or client here at the University of Warwick Science Park or at a similar innovation or business centre, look out for events such as networking breakfasts, workshops and investor days.

How to build a network with purpose

Don’t fall into the trap of just collecting contacts. Building a network as a business leader needs to go deeper than that. So, how can you make sure that your follow-up emails don’t get left unread and that those plans to meet up materialise?

A lot of it comes down to the basics: be authentic, be yourself, listen, demonstrate strong social skills and follow up with any promises that you make! A huge part of successful networking and relationship building is also about giving back. Whether it’s introducing someone to another person of interest, sharing information, or offering to help, giving back builds the foundations of a good working relationship. Our Ignite Alumni Network is a great example where meaningful connections are made and lasting relationships are forged between companies.

3 common networking mistakes to avoid

Learning how to build your network effectively can open doors to new opportunities, partnerships, and growth, but it’s easy to fall into habits that hold you back. Here are three common pitfalls to avoid if you want to make your networking efforts count.

Don’t wait for people to come to you

Many people will agree that the hardest thing about networking is actually making the first move, approaching others and starting the conversation. Whether it’s at networking events, conferences and award ceremonies, or within business and innovation hubs, the anxiety can really limit your potential opportunities.

If you find it difficult and uncomfortable breaking the ice at networking events, it’s a good idea to arrive early when the room is quieter. It can also be beneficial to position yourself near the entrance or near refreshments. This can make it easier to start conversations more naturally.

Look for people who are standing alone. They probably feel just like you and will really appreciate you making the first move and chatting to them. Remember – most people will welcome your interactions!

Avoid small talk

Don’t waste a networking opportunity with superficial conversations. There’s certainly a place for pleasantries (being too abrupt about business can come across the wrong way), but meaningful business relationships are built on substance.

Small talk has its place, but try to use it as a stepping stone towards the meaningful stuff. Focus on asking questions and showing genuine interest in the other person’s business and challenges. Share your insights or experiences that can add value.

Balance networking & running your business

As a business owner, your to-do list can feel never-ending. Sometimes, the thought of putting networking events, follow-ups, and relationship building into the mix can feel impossible. It is difficult to balance it all, but adding the time-investment needed for networking into your schedule doesn’t have to feel unmanageable.

Choose quality over quantity. You may want to choose one or two events or meetings that align with your business goals, rather than spreading yourself too thin and trying to do too much at once. Try and treat these as non-negotiable appointments. It can be too tempting to give them a miss when it rolls around and you’re feeling busy in other areas.
