Carter Jonas: Shaping the Future – Science and Technology Innovation

Carter Jonas is a leading multi-disciplinary property consultancy working in the science and technology sector. With over 160 years of experience, its teams work nationally with sector-specific companies, helping them to unlock innovation, by finding the right properties, including specialised labs, manufacturing facilities and offices.

The UK is internationally recognised for its innovation in science and technology, where invention and disruptive technology have long been at the heart of British industry, leading to groundbreaking discoveries such as the steam engine, the television and antibiotics.

As the fourth-ranked economy out of 131 in the 2023 Global Innovation Index, the UK’s science and technology sectors remain vital to the national economy, demonstrating robust growth and attracting significant investment, particularly in response to recent global challenges.

The focus on the science, technology and innovation sectors is expected to continue, with the new government highlighting these areas as key components of the Autumn Budget 2024. The new Chancellor announced government investment of £20.4 billion in research and development for the coming year, fulfilling Labour’s pre-election commitment to support the UK’s R&D ecosystem in driving economic growth and achieving five national missions:

  • Kickstart economic growth
  • Make Britain a clean energy superpower
  • Take back our streets
  • Break down barriers to opportunity
  • Build an NHS fit for the future

To maximise their capacity for specialised science and technology activities, companies must have access to the right property, designed to meet sector-specific R&D requirements, from labs and offices to workshops and manufacturing facilities. The right property enhances efficiency, provides space for necessary equipment, and ensures safe working practices. Our role is to assist companies in finding the ideal space with the right specifications, allowing them to focus on their core activities and do what they do best.

The UK’s Industrial Strategy Green Paper, Invest 2035, published last month, highlighted six science and technology sectors among the eight identified for priority growth in services and manufacturing: Advanced Manufacturing, Clean Energy Industries, Creative Industries, Defence, Digital and Technologies, and Life Sciences. These priorities indicate that the UK is poised for continued focus and growth within the innovation sectors.
